Am I ready for a professional flute?
I've been considering purchasing a new flute for some time now, but I'm not sure whether I should buy a professional flute or a high-end intermediate flute (pre-professional?). I've only been playing flute for 6 years, but I'm hoping to continue playing in college. I currently own a Yamaha YFL-321, and I'm displeased with the sound quality and features of it. I'm looking for a flute with
- Offset G
- B Foot
- Silver Headjoint (NOT plated)
- Drawn Tone Holes
I'd like one with a good, crisp, clean sound .Preferably one that can reach my higher notes at pp with ease (something that's near impossible on mine)
If there are any suggestions it would be great!
There is no reason for you spend ten grand or more for a professional flute. (Many companies call the top flute they make - even if it is only for HS or college kids - a professional flute. You can call ME Miss America - it does not make it true.) You do not speak of a teacher - THEY should advise you, frankly. Yes, it is possible that you have outgrown the Yamaha - and it is equally possible that a REALLY good tech - not the guy at the local music store, not matter who raves about him - is going to do this. Ship this to one of the TOP techs - yes, many of them work on these instruments - and be amazed at the difference when you get it back! Seriously!
You say you want a silver head - but do not mention a silver body. So you are STILL talking about intermediate flutes. Yes, you can do just fine with drawn toneholes - even many TOP makers use them, since they are lighter in overall mass in the entire instrument. The offset G is a great idea, and you will need a B foot (let's not have other people get into the false argument about that necessity.) Have you considered a donut - or a split E? And you will find a C# trill key a BIG help.
So - get yourslef onto the Fluteworld site. Look further up the line at Yamaha, or DiMedici, or Azumi, or Pearl, or Brio, or Trevor James. The HOT recommendation right now is DiZhao - I have played these at the last National Flute Association convention in NYC last August ( yeah, I am in the Guinness Book of World Records with Sir James Galway - world's largest flute quartet - almost 2,000 of us) and all of us who played these flutes were very impressed - a lot of flute for the money.
You can go to Yahoo Groups and join FLUTENET - there are over 3,000 of us there who are professional flutists and serious flute students - you can get really GOOD advice there. You can also go to www.jennifercluff.com - great advice on flute shopping, among other things. No, I am NOT Jen - she lives in Vancouver,I live in NY.
Good luck with your search - but do NOT do this alone.
