Which brand is best for an open hole flute?
I'm considering buying an open hole flute for the start of high school.
Preferably, something that's not to pricey (one of my friends got on for $1200, so preferably something lower than or around that price) with good tone quality and ease of use.
If you could recommend a particular model as well, that would be helpful.
Open hole flutes are just like closed hole...find one that works best for you. What you will most likely find as I have over the years is that the more they cost does not mean they are better. I am in a flute choir of 12 flutes and 10 of use have the older model (about 5 years old now) that would be the armstrong with out set G, gizmo key, sterling silver body and gold plated lip plate. They have excellent sound and are still about 1000. The series number has changed but they are identical to the older versions.
The person above said that the yamaha isn't the greatest, they are okay. I like the sounds of them as long as you test them before and see what type of intonation, tone quality and projection you can get out of it.
Some brand I would not go with is Pearl. The tone isn't the best and personally I think you get ripped out of your money.
Other brands to try are Altus, they are a little more but good. If you can afford it or its available try a jupiter or Emerson. they are very good but like i said they do cost more.
A site I would recommend that you look at is Fluteworld.com they do have instrument testing out of store. That is where all of the flutes in our flute choir buys their instruements, accessories and music. I would check it out.
