Woodwind Instruments - Spirituality and Music

We all know the impact that a skilled flautist's tunes can have on the ear, and we might even notice the subtle but powerful variations among different types of flutes, but most of us are unaware of the technical and historical details that make the flute truly remarkable among woodwind instruments.

Like other woodwinds, the flute has been used by mankind since ancient times, and may have been in use for as many as 35,000 to 40,000 years. Most likely, the contemporary flute and similar instruments originated in Europe, where much of western music has its origins, and the influence of these original musical concepts still holds sway over other variations. However, this model drew on a long history of similar instruments that appeared all over the world.

All flutes create sound by forcing air blown through them to exit at intervals through holes that the flautist can block or open to create different tones. Usually flutes have five to eight holes but the quantity of holes varies from 5 to 8 holes. The flute has a larger air stream and a larger resonator which increases the sound of the flute. If the holes of the flute are made larger than the volume of the flute melody also increases. In order for playing the flute it is necessary that the air stream must be directed at the correct angle or else the flute would not vibrate.

The oldest known flute had three holes, was made from mammoth tusk, and was 18.7 cm long. This particular flute was discovered in 2004, but several other prehistoric flute samples have been found; two later flutes were made from swan bones. These discovered flutes were said to have been the oldest instruments in the history of mankind. Another flute was also discovered which, according to the experts, is found to be older than nine thousand years and was made by wing bones of the red-crowned cranes

Over time, flutes and flutelike instruments made their appearance in Asia. In early days the Chinese flute was known as a chi flute, and one of the oldest examples of one has been discovered in the Tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng of China. This particular type of flute was made of lacquered bamboo, and the five stops of the flute were located at the end, a notable difference in comparison to the flutes of today, which have stops at the top.

During the 19th century western concert flute was discovered. Flute is an instrument which produces sweet sounds that inspires everyone and it is said that it inspires the soul of mankind. There are many flute players in the world that has produced many melodious tones and have shared remarkably well in music industry. Flute playing is found in many civilized countries of the world.

Many cultures incorporate flute music into their religious systems. In India, the flute is an important instrument for many musicians. The Indian god Krishna is considered to be a master of the flute, and in many instances is pictured with the Indian flute, a simpler device that is made of bamboo and, unlike western versions, has no keys.

One factor that makes the flute so attractive and a persistent part of so many cultures is its simplicity; while today's western flutes have a complex design involving moveable stops, many Asian flute designs do not. The Indian flutes associated with Krishna, for example, while they still require precision to create, are a simpler design that in some respects makes them easier to use.

Today, modern science and technologies have significantly impacted the ways we create music, from the methods we use to create and tune instruments, to the means we use to transmit sound, through everything from in-person flute concerts to streaming internet radio stations. It also affects the transmission of sound at concerts; with the help of amplifiers, subwoofers, and a range of other sound equipment, even the light tones of a penny whistle can be heard by an entire stadium of people.
