The Then and Now of Flute Music
Some people might argue that the oldest form of music came from drums. However, we're sorry to say that they're wrong. No, what you see on TV with all the prehistoric cavemen banging on drums made by animal hide is not completely true. To tell the truth, one of the oldest musical instruments is the humble flute. Yes, it has just recently been found by German scientists that the flute has already been in use during the prehistoric age—even going as far back as 35,000 years ago.
In fact, flute music is one of the oldest forms of music known to man. We've been playing the lively instrument almost at the same time we've discovered fire. That said, it's safe to say that music has been a part of our culture—our lives—ever since we were still finding our way to survive. However, the flutes then were vastly different from the ones you see today. Thousands of years ago, flutes were made from tusks and bones. Some of the earliest Paleolithic flutes were made from the bones of cave bears, vulture wings and even mammoth tusks. The way they use it, however, is similar to how we play our flutes today.
Despite being one of the oldest musical instruments in human history, the flute also has so many different regional variations. It has seen use in Spain, Germany, China, and even to go as far as ancient South America. The flute, like any other instrument, was also used in ceremonial, religious, as well as recreational purposes. The Bible, in fact, even mentions it. In fact, experts say that ancient flute musicprovided sophistication to the people that lived at that time. That's because this form of music requires a form of music theory, making the flute one of the first examples of musical culture.
Thousands of years after the invention of the bone flute, its modern successor is still in wide use today. And yes, almost every nation has its own version of it. From the Indian Bansuri, the Chinese Dizi, and the Japanese Fue, flutes are still being played for both religious and recreational reasons. In fact, you can still see the instrument being played at theaters and at the opera. On top of that, the instrument is also an essential part to any orchestra there is today. With its rich history, the flute could be considered a representation of human culture. From the primitive to the civilized, the flute is one of the oldest, basic, and most widely used instrument in human history.
So, if you want to continue on with the culture and tradition, or if you want to diversify your musical range, then the next best thing is to get to know the instrument a little better by experiencing it firsthand. How? You can take flute lessons. By learning how to play the instrument, you can see how easy and enjoyable flute musicis. You'll also be able to carry on a tradition that's been around ever since the dawn of man. Try enrolling today!
