You draw on Ki power to initiate special attacks like Krillin's Destructo Disk and Piccolo's Special Beam Cannon, and when the right abilities are activated more damaging and elaborate combo attacks are unleashed. These can be rather pretty, and again stay faithful to the style of the show where enemies get hit with a rapid series of attacks and then slammed into walls, at which point another character might blast a gigantic energy beam at them or another blink in to initiate more rapid-fire melee strikes.
These combos can be discovered through experimentation or by collecting information while roaming through the game world, and add a welcome dimension to the combat as they make it feel like you're always building towards something.
The use of these combos and each character's most powerful attacks are regulated by a rage gauge that fills as you deal and take damage, creating a flow and progression in battles. Each turn you strike with standard and special hits with the intention of maxing out your rage gauge, giving you something to look forward to.

During that process the game keeps you engaged with the fighting with an Active Guard system where, at a point before an enemy attack, you can time a button press to reduce incoming damage. The trick is the window of opportunity and timing of each Active Guard is different across enemy types and attacks, so you'll need to pay attention if you want to be as effective as possible.
