Marching Band Flute
How many flutes are in your marching band?

My daughter is putting a great deal of effort into learning how to play the flute. Her music teacher told her that the high school band only uses three flutes. She is concerned that she won't be able to continue playing her flute if there is no need for flutes.

So, is it true that only three flutes are used in bands?

To short answer your question is that it is possible there are currently only three flutes in the band however, it is very likely that that is not a set number and she will still be able to play.

There is really no correct instrumentation (number of each instrument) for any band. The number of instruments in any given section is usually dependent on the size of the band program. For example this year our marching band is pretty small and we only have 3 flutes and 2 piccolos. A larger band may have upwards of 15-20. Most marching bands do not require an audition and will accept any person who is will in to work hard.

As far as concert bands (sometimes thought of as "normal" band) there is also no correct instrumentation. Again it depends on the size of the band program. Most high schools have several levels of band. Her teacher may have meant that the top band usually only takes 3 flutes. I have never heard of a band program where only a set number of instrumentalist were allowed in the entire band program. So, she may not make the top band her first year (I didn't make my high schools top band my freshman year) but I would bet money that she would still get to participate in band.

I recommend that you contact one of the high school's band directors and express your daughter's concern to them.
