Practicing my flute- What do I do now?
This year my high school band is playing three very difficult- but not impossible- pieces for contest. Two of them I play on flute and the third I play on piccolo. I have always practiced difficult music using the method where you play it with a metronome on a speed you can handle and then gradually increase the speed. For some reason this method is no longer working. One night I spent thirty minutes on the same twelve measures and made no progress because every time I increased the speed of my metronome by one notch I couldn't play the part and had to go back to the speed I'd been playing. Has anyone out there had the same problem as I am? Does anyone out there know how to solve it? Contest is in a few weeks, and I desperately need to improve, so any and all help is sincerely appreciated!
A few things!
1) It may have just been a bad practice session. All musicians have these now and then. Have a little break and get back to it later. Remember we all go through bad spots in or playing!
2) Try doing the same method a bar at a time! Slow yes but like the metronome method best for practicing. This may also tell you exactly WHERE in those twelve measures the problem lies and help you to fix it. Go note by note if you have to! Use colours for different rhythms! Anything you have too to make it more easier!
3) Ask your Flute teacher That's what we are here for!
4) Ask yourself why is it difficult? Is it really? Half of performing is mental preparation. One thing that I do with my students is tell them that it is the easiest piece in the world. and them I show them that it is by asking them to play the easy bits!
5) A great resource is practicspot.com there may be other ideas there!
You may also want to listen to the piece you are playing. There are lots of pieces on youtube etc. Maybe your teacher has a recording. If that musician can conquer that piece so can you!
Good luck!
