Will playing piccolo during marching band season help or hurt my flute playing?
Great question - and I have *opinions* (what else is new???) I think playing FLUTE outside for marching is a waste of time, and often injurious to your playing. However, playing piccolo uses a fast, focused airstream - so usually you can defeat the breezes, and still be heard. Do NOT blast - really, , we can hear you. PLEASE wear hearing protection - those earplugs will not block out all the sound, just the ultra-sonic harmonics that make you lose your hearing. People that play in Broadway pits - any instrument - are provided the cost of these as an employment benefit. Most school ensemble director s- of they have any brains at all - wear these in every rehearsal and performance. The DB in front oa band is louder than a jet taking off - and lasts longer!
The picc you play will make a bigg difference. Get an ALL_PLASTIC (composition) picc. Do NOT play an al-metal or half plastic/half metal picc - these are really screechy sounding, and the tone is hard to control. Scientifically - they produce sound waves with an overabundance of high harmonics - JUST the ones that cause you to lose your hearing - that is why people wince when they hear the picc. An all-plastic (and in orchestra, all-wood) picc are definitely bright enough to be heard outdoors, but sweet enough for indoors concert work.
So - now when you come to your flute, your embouchure is fine - it will be reasonably relaxed, because you were playing in a picc that does not fight with you. If you are required to play a horrible metal school picc - then ask to play bells or carry a flag instead. Really. Why should you ruin yourself - for what??
So - good plastic picc, ear protection, relaxed embouchure, no blasting - you will be fine.
