Why is there a preferred fingering for F# on flute?
I know how to play F#5 (the F# at the top of the treble clef) by pressing a key with my ring finger (the right-most key on the body) and also by pressing a key with my middle finger (the large key directly to the left of the other key). In the book I'm using, the Rubank Advanced Method book, at the bottom of one of the pages it says that the use of the second and E-flat key to play F# should be discouraged. I asked my teacher about this and he said that it didn't really matter, but is there any specific reason for it?
Kab is correct! You should know ALL the fingerings, and then use the one best suited to the piece you are playing. Of the alternates, there always seems to be one that requires extra care with intonation, and that one should be avoided unless necessary for speed and smoothness in playing.
