Flute advice for the beginner. Care Advice.?

Ive just bought a Yamaha 221S flute as a present for an 11 year old, it only has a hard case and I would like to get a few extras too. Can anyone with knowledge of flutes help please. Im looking at extras such as cleaning rods, but theres plastic, metal, etc what is the best to get? Oils or grease? How often should it be cleaned - is it after so many hours of playing. I think the flute is silver plated and how often should the flute be cleaned, what should be used to clean it - so not to tarnish it? Your expertise will be appreciated. Many thanks.

Firstly well done for getting a Yamaha they are reliable flutes and don't break easily. March (the other person who's answered your question) has answered it like flutes are exactly like saxophones. They're not at all. Here are the things you definitely shouldn't buy: disinfectant as the flute doesn't go in you mouth, powder paper for pads (these can damage the pads), cork grease/oil (the only cork in a flute is inaccessible without taking it apart and cork grease is meant for wooden instruments), and presuming you bought a new flute I wouldn't recommend buying a silver polishing cloth as the flute won't get tarnished in it's first year and the silver cloth will just strip the flute of it's silver which will make the tone worse because Yamaha's 200 series are only sliver plated not solid silver. Now for the things you should buy: a pad saver is a good safe alternative to powder papers as they prevent sticky keys but don't damage the pads (you can buy one here http://www.justflutes.com/pages/product-detail16483.htm ); a gauze cloth for removing moisture from the inside of the flute minimises corrosion and should always be used after playing for even the shortest amount of time (you can buy one here http://www.justflutes.com/pages/product-detail51996.htm ); you will need a cleaning rod to wrap the gauze around, wooden is best because it doesn't scratch the inside of the flute like metal ones, or you could buy a plastic one as a cheaper alternative (you can buy one here http://www.justflutes.com/pages/product-detail16773.htm ); a microfibre cloth to remove fingerprints without removing precious silver keeps my flute clean and shiny but still playing good as new (you can buy one here http://www.justflutes.com/pages/product-detail27373.htm ); a flute stand is always useful especially when you need to adjust the height of a music stand and need to put your flute somewhere (so many flutes get damaged that way) (you can buy one here http://www.justflutes.com/pages/product-detail345.htm ); a case cover for the hard case is useful as many hard cases don't have handles (you can buy one in a variety of colours here http://www.justflutes.com/pages/product-detail59985.htm ). Phew! I think that's just about everything, I hope I helped and I'm sorry this answers so long, I just started typing and didn't stop! If you don't want to get all of this stuff then just go for cleaning rod, gauze and case cover are the most useful. You can buy this stuff from most music shops but I've always found Just Flutes as the best.
