What to look for when buying a flute?
Hi I have been playing the flute for four years now. I have a beginner closed holed flute (nickle) yamaha, but i really think I have outgrown playing this. I would like to get a silver open holed b flute, but i don't know price ranges of these flutes. I also would like to know what you think are the best brands out there. I also am curious about an offset g or an inline g. What is better? Harder to play? Which oe makes a better sound? and any other information you have about flutes would really be appreciated.

Fluteworld is a business based out of Michigan. They have several different brands to choose from range from a couple of hundred dollars to tens of thousands.
In-line and Off-set G are not going to make a difference in the sound of a flute. It used to be the thought that all professional flutes had to have an in-line G. As people become more aware of how the body works and ergonomics, that theory is going out the window. You can now get a conservatory or professional model with either. When I started looking at the end of last year I thought I just had to have an in-line. I ended up getting offset, and due to my short fingers it is wonderful!! Now when I pick up an in-line my hands get tired after about five minutes of playing.
If you are really interested in getting a solid silver flute I would go to a specialty shop if you can. Search in your area and see if you can find a store like Fluteworld. I spent four hours there trying out different flutes. Between there and the local instrument store I tried about thirty different flutes. To get a conservatory flute I would plan on spending up to $2,500.
One model that most are not familiar with are the Amadeus flutes. These flutes are produced by Haynes, however the cost is kept down by producing them over seas. I got a solid silver conservatory for 2200. To get a Yamaha, Gemeinhardt, Pearl, I would have either only had a silver head, or I would have had to spend another thousand + to get solid silver. There are several other makers there to look at also.
Another good thing about Fluteworld is they have a consignment shop. You can get a professional flute for a fraction of the cost.
When it comes to buying an instrument I would refrain from buying off of ebay at this point. With not knowing much about what you want, or quality it wouldn't be the best decision. Plus, I have heard a lot of horror stories about the instruments on e-bay.
