Beginner flute - rent or buy?
My daughter - 4th grade/newbie - will start flute lessons/band with her school. I see on EBay, many $110-135 Gemeinhardt 2SP and Yamaha student used flutes from kids who lost interested. The ones I'm watching have scratches but no dings. I'm thinking if my daughter loses interest, I can resell it on EBay. If I rent a flute, I will have to pay $135-$180 for the school year depending on the store.
I never played an instrument let alone purchased one. I don't want to get taken because of my inexperience! What should I do?
Rent first from a local music store. If your daughter's only in the fourth grade she may well lose interest fast in her flute- there's a lot of instruments out there she might decide she likes better. eBay instruments usually are not good to buy since you can't test the sound quality of them first: that's a big factor. If she doesn't lose interest and wants to keep playing, most music stores have a rent-to-own deal, so that eventually you can keep the flute you rented.
