How much will the operation impact on playing the flute?
Hi, I'm grade 6 at the flute and have to have surgery on my teeth next week. I'm having a surgical extraction, a normal extraction and 2 eruption appliances (I think they're called, anyway they're little chains to pull the teeth down, out of the gum and into place) on my canines.
I've got a flute concert coming up, and I'm playing a solo in the orchestra (unless the operation mucks everything up, I do have a stand in because I've told my teacher). I've got the appointment to have braces fitted booked for after the concert, but had to have the op. sometime soon. It will be about 3 weeks before the concert, so I'll have a little time to adapt if necessary. I just wondered if there were any musicians here who've had the same sort of thing, or any dentists who can tell me how sore the mouth will be/how much impact the chains have on shaping the lips and having a concentrated airflow (a bit like whistling I suppose..)
Depending on how well you heal up, and how you feel after the surgery you might be able to play flute. I know I'm getting wisdom teeth pulled soon and I won't be able to play my flute for close to a week. This surgery maybe one of those that you won't be able to tell till after its all said and done.
