Getting a new Flute...?
I was thinking of getting a new flute because I'm getting better. One that's like an intermediate and not a student. I've been researching and my teacher says to get a flute with these:
-Solid Silver Headjoint (or whole body and footjoint is nicer)
-B foot
-Open holes
-Offset G
Optional:
-Split E
-Gold Springs
-Gold mouth plate
She said to get a Yamaha Allegro. Those are the best I think... Armstrong is another option. Does this sound good? Anymore recommendations? Plus, where can I buy a flute with these?
I remember getting a new flute last summer...Now, the kind of flute that you should all depends on YOU and the price you are shooting for. Remember, any chinese cheap junker brands can have a solid silver headjoint, b foot, open holes, and offset G...even a split E!!!! But they do NOT guarantee you a good sound. Your teacher has given very good standards, but just remember that you're shooting for how well the flute is CRAFTED, not exactly the features. Nevertheless...yamaha allegros are good. I tried those, however, do not always buy the flutes because your "teacher says so" and it's definitely a danger to say "those are the best, i think, so I think i'm going to buy these flutes." What's best is for you to try the flutes out and see which one is comfortable and easy for you to play. Also, while you're trying different flutes out, examine the sound and the differences between the new flute and your old flute. For example, on my old flute, I didn't feel comfortable playing it anymore especailly because the response became very slow and the dynamics started to fade away. So, I compared with different flutes and found out that the Yamaha 584 was best for me. Who knows? Maybe the armstrong might be better for you...or some other flute...just remember, NO CHEAP CHINESE JUNKER BRANDS!! you will surely regret it. I would say, shoot for any price range from $1500 to $4000. Also, consider how long you're going to play the flute. If you plan on keeping this flute all the way to college, then consider buying a flute towards the professional level rather than the intermediate flute, because if you're playing a yamaha 471 for example (that's an allegro), you might quickly grow out of that flute as well...then you'll have to buy ANOTHER flute....that could be quite a pain.
And once again, about the whole "features" thing...Remember, it's the "Crafted" part you are looking for. My flute is certainly NOT completely sterling silver, yet it is still a "professional" flute and it is pricier than other flutes that have the whole body & footjoint silver...why? The quality of craft. My headjoint is sterling silver, however, and it has a certain cut (EC) to the embochure hole that allows an easier tone and an excellent projection to it. And I must admit, I am VERY pleased with my new flute. On the other hand, I tried a flute that is almost all sterling silver and it is no where near as good as the Yamaha 584. And about the open holes, too, it is a myth that open holes provide you a better tone...however, if you want to look professional then you are more than welcome to get open holes...if you are very advanced, these open holes will help you later on in a very special technique in very few pieces. The only reason why I got open holes is because my first flute had open holes too, so I got used to those keys rather than the closed holes. And remember, most of the quality of tone always depends on the player!!!
Some recommendations:
Yamaha (300s and 400s--the intermediates, don't have that much of a difference than the beginner flutes...Just remember that! The 500s, however makes a huge difference...why? the headjoint! it's ALL about the crafting of the headjoint...Oh yeah, btw, the gold lip plate stuff....just don't go for that stuff, this gold lip plate thing does not affect your sound AT ALL, unless you are willing to sacrifice more money just to look more professional)
Azumi
Muramatsu (if you are very serious into the music career)
Powell
Sonare
Emerson
Armstrong
These are only the few popular brands that you can rely and trust!!! And please...no Gemeinhardt...Those flutes are good for beginners, but not as excellent for professionals and step-ups.. And Pearl used to be a very good brand, but as of now, I would have to say, unless you tried a Pearl flute, don't buy Pearl flutes!! Since Pearl had moved their manufacturing company to another location, the quality of the crafting has diminished, and some people have been very unsastified because of this!
And I would say this...Try the Yamaha 584!!! It is a beautiful flute and it won't let you down! But once again, TRY the flute first. Many people have said that the Yamaha 584 can keep you for 10 years or even beyond that if you take GOOD care of it.
Good sites: www.fluteworld.com <---this site actually allows you to try out flutes for about 10 days or so before you completely purchase them
But I think it's best to not buy flutes online, especially eBay (of course, unless you REALLY know what you are doing). Go to a local music store (with an expert, reliable dealer) and I guarantee you that they will have some step-up flutes...try them out! And remember, don't always listen to the dealer's suggestion sometimes, who is the flute player? you, or the dealer? The dealer may give some false info/myths or misconceptions, such as the whole "oh, buy this flute...it has open holes and a silver headjoint" because you know that there might be a better flute out there that may not have those features. And if you are interested in buying, for example, an Azumi 3000 but the music store doesn't have one, then just ask if they can order the flute so you can try it out. I remember that I asked my music store to order a Yamaha 584 flute, and that didn't hurt at all! And sometimes, the dealer could have lower prices/discounts which is all the better...my yamaha was around the $3000 range, but I only had to pay $1800 (and no, the flute was not used). Good luck!!
