These Marvelous Musician-Wizards Of Karnatic Music
I have been grown up filling the music-nectar in my both ears. There is a community hall near to my home in Mysore(Karnataka-India). During Ramanavami (after Ugaadi at the end of march) celebrations, the boys of our age were in ‘music' mood. That was the time when the examinations were over. We were free and eagerly awaiting to witness the inauguration of music programs.
In those days, the problem the musicians had been facing was regarding Tamburi.(Tamburi is a string instrument used for maintaining perfect octavo. It was continuously plucked when the music performance was going on).
Time and again I plucked Tamburi for several musicians. Once, Chittibabu(famous Veena artist) was going to perform. He had not brought any Tamburi artist . I was among the audience. Before the performance was started, Puttanna, the organizer of the performance, stood in front of the audience and announced that the performance badly needed a Tamburi artist. One of my friend bore on me with his elbow! I was hesitating a bit. I was not in mood to face the audience. Because I wanted to listen music sitting by other audience, that's all. But when my friend insisted several times that I had to go , I stood up, sat on the stage and plucked Tamburi for Chittibabu. It was one of unforgettable experience in my life as it was the first time that I was listening an artist's performance from that near.
My favourite place of music festival was Aralikatte Rammandir. I heard most of my favourite musicians there. In Vocal, Maharajapuram Santanam, , Radha/Jayalakshmi, Dr. Balamurali, Dr.M.Subbalakshmi; In violin, Lalgudi G.Jayaraman; In flute, Dr.N.Ramani; In Naagasvara(a huge wind instrument) Shake Chinna Maulana Saheb so on and so forth.
Once , Maharajapuram Santanam's music was started at 6 PM. He was dipping the audience in nectar. Time was flying . 9 pm, 10 pm, 11,12, 1 am. He was not in the mood to stop. At last, the organizers humbly requested him to come to end as most of the audience depended upon government buses to return their homes and, if he will continue, the employees' daily work of the next day will be badly effected. Reluctantly, he stopped.
But Shake Chinna Maulana's Naagasvara recital was an exception to usual duration of three or four hours. Prior to the commencement of performance, the organizers were already announcing that the duration of his recital may be eight or nine hours. Usually, he would start at 8pm and end at 4am or 5am next day! Once he played Abheri (a particular raaga) for three hours. In the next performance his Todi(a particular raaga) filled four hours!
And Dr.N.Ramani! When his flute was heard, I was feeling as if I was swimming in the divine river of heaven. I have not come across any other flutist in my entire life who can be compared to Dr. Ramani. All the blends, curves, and melodious vibrations of vocalists were clearly emanated from this flute wizard! He was actually talking and playing with Raagas like Bindumaalini, Hindola, Begade and Saaveri.
I have been encountering with so many negative experiences so far. In spite of that if I have not lost hope in my life, that is because of these sages like musicians. Obeisance to them.
